Outside the Super’s office Ryan sat in a spare seat at the edge of the open-plan. He’d sat outside offices all his life waiting to be called in, usually to be shouted at, by headmasters, wardens, social workers and, later in life, police superintendents; he was used to having things explained to him by men (and women) putting on scary voices. It was only noise. So he sat there thinking about something else, Mick Dick, trying to imagine those last minutes of his life, the terror that wasn’t terror, or only partly terror. Partly horror, partly fury. He could imagine Mick finding the ribbons in the van, his puzzlement to begin with, then his first troubled thought of that girl who’d gone missing, whose picture was everywhere, Poppy Clarke in her pirate costume with her jacket and cutlass and red and black ribbons, four years old, just Ashleigh’s age; then an inkling, the creeping suspicion of what Cobb was, a growing conviction of what he’d done; then the horror at the mistake he’d made himself in helping him; finally the rage that sent him running across the water meadows towards Cumnor but, as it happened, only as far as Hinksey and a night-time driver off his head. Ashleigh in his thoughts as he ran into the road.

The door to the Super’s office opened and Ray came out. For a moment he hesitated and their eyes met, then he walked on without saying anything. The Super, standing in the doorway, made a brief gesture and turned back to his desk, and Ryan followed him inside.
